Up Station

The higher ridge of Bamenda — about 200 metres above the main town — is the historic colonial-administrative district, with the residence of the governor, the provincial offices, the airport, and the older colonial-era hotels. The views over the bowl of Bamenda below and the surrounding hills are excellent.

The road up from Down Station is steep and switchbacking; on foot it takes about 45 minutes from the centre. A taxi is more sensible. The area is quieter than Down Station and a pleasant place for an evening walk when the temperature drops.

A story
The colonial 'Up Station' and 'Down Station' nomenclature dates from the German period, when colonial administrators built their houses on the cool ridge above the African town below. The British kept the names after taking the territory in 1916, and they remain in everyday use today.
