Benedictine Monastery of Mont Fébé

The Benedictine Monastery of Mont Fébé sits on one of the hills north of Yaoundé, above the city and its noise. The monastery was founded in the 1960s and the monks maintain a working agricultural community alongside their religious life. The church itself is handsome without being spectacular, but the setting — wooded hillside, views over the city, cool air — makes the trip worthwhile.

The real draw for many visitors is the monastery shop, where the brothers sell their own-produced food: chocolate, biscuits, liqueurs, and honey. The chocolate is genuinely excellent. Mass is open to the public and the monks are accustomed to visitors, though the monastery is a working religious community and should be treated accordingly. The road up the hill is navigable by taxi.

A story
The monks at Mont Fébé produce their own chocolate, liqueurs, and honey, which can be bought at the monastery shop. The chocolate in particular has a reputation that extends well beyond Yaoundé — made from locally grown cacao in a country that is one of Africa's major producers, it is a good deal better than most of what you find in Cameroonian supermarkets.
