Ilhéu de Sal Rei, also called Djeu, lies just offshore from Boa Vista's capital and changes the whole shape of the bay. The low, uninhabited islet has pale beaches, basaltic rock, and the remains of Forte Duque de Bragança on its southern side, a reminder that this quiet-looking water was once watched for ships.
Most visitors see it by small boat, kayak, or as part of a short coastal excursion from Sal Rei. The appeal is simple: views back to town and the dunes, a little snorkelling in calmer water, and the pleasure of stepping away from the busier beach strip for an hour or two.
