Boa Vista's consistent northeast trade winds and flat, shallow lagoons make it one of the better kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations in the Atlantic. The main spot is the lagoon north of Sal Rei, where flat water inside the reef and strong wind allow both beginners and advanced riders to practise.
Several rental and lesson operators are based in and around Sal Rei. The wind blows most reliably between November and June; summer months are lighter but still workable. Beginners should take lessons in the lagoon before venturing out into the open ocean where swells and currents are less forgiving.
