Bahary (Anfushi)

The old fishing quarter at the western end of the corniche, between the Eastern Harbour and the open sea. Bahary preserves more of working-class Alexandrian life than any other downtown district — narrow alleys, old courtyard houses, small mosques, the fish market, and traditional fishing boats still hauled up on the seawall.

The Mosque of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi and the Qaitbay Citadel are both here; the fish market is the eating destination; the back-alley cafes are the place to drink tea with old men playing dominoes. Walking the district from the Citadel to the mosque, then south through the bazaar streets, takes about two hours at a slow pace and is one of the best urban walks in Egypt. Wear modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) — this is a religious and traditional neighbourhood, not a tourist quarter.
