Montazah

The eastern end of the corniche, anchored by the Montazah Palace gardens. Montazah feels distinctly different from downtown Alexandria — newer, lower-density, more residential, with a strip of upper-middle-class apartment buildings facing the sea and the long arc of the palace's coastline.

Most visitors come for the gardens and beaches inside the Montazah complex itself — Aida, Cleopatra, and Maamoura among them. The neighbourhood also has a few of the city's better hotel restaurants (Sheraton Montazah, Helnan Palestine) and some pleasant cafes along the curving avenue that follows the palace wall. Connection to downtown is by the corniche road (about 20 km, an hour by taxi in normal traffic) or by the long tram line.
