Al-Rifa'i Mosque stands beside the older Sultan Hassan Mosque and forms part of one of Islamic Cairo's grandest architectural groupings. Completed in the early 20th century, it was built on a monumental scale and holds the tombs of members of Egypt's royal family, as well as the last Shah of Iran.
The mosque is worth visiting together with Sultan Hassan, since the contrast between the medieval and modern buildings is part of the appeal.
