Maadi Sporting Club

Colonial-era sporting club with tennis, golf, and a swimming pool for day members

The Maadi Sporting Club is a large recreational club on the southern edge of Maadi, founded in 1907 by the British community and continuing to operate as a private membership club with facilities for swimming, tennis, squash, golf (9-hole course), and various other sports. Day membership is available for visitors, making it a useful facility for those staying in the area for more than a few days.

The club's grounds are large and green — unusual in Cairo — and the facilities are well-maintained. The swimming pool is open in summer and popular with Maadi families. The atmosphere is distinctly Anglo-Egyptian: the kind of institution that survived the transition from colonial to post-colonial Egypt by adapting to serve its new middle-class membership without changing its essential character.
