Many divers consider Abu Kifan the most spectacular site in the Safaga area. The name means "the deep one" in Arabic, and the walls justify it: sheer drops into hundreds of metres of blue water, covered from top to bottom in luxuriant soft corals, black corals, and gorgonian fans. Schools of barracuda spiral in the water column, reef sharks patrol the outer edge, and turtles surface periodically to breathe before descending again. The site rewards patience — linger at any point on the wall and the fish come to you.
