Soma Bay Windsurfing & Kitesurfing

About 7 km north of Safaga town, Soma Bay's wide shallow lagoon is the main hub for wind sports on this stretch of coast. Two separate sailing areas keep windsurfers and kitesurfers from tangling with each other, divided by a large sandbank. The lagoon gives beginners flat, manageable water; outside it, the chop and stronger gusts suit advanced riders and foilers. The ION CLUB operates a centre here offering rental equipment and lessons. Wind blows almost year-round, but the consistent season peaks from May through October when afternoon gusts regularly hit 25–30 knots. In the morning it comes from offshore, shifting side-shore around midday — the classic pattern for a productive session. Safaga's reputation as Egypt's best windsurfing destination is well earned.
