La Tante DC-10 (The Green Plane)

Decommissioned passenger jet converted into a restaurant near Kotoka Airport

One of Accra's most improbable dining experiences: a decommissioned DC-10 widebody aircraft dragged from a runway and positioned beside the road near Kotoka International Airport, where it has been operating as a restaurant for over twenty years. The original cabin layout survives — you eat from trays in the passenger seats, served by staff in flight-attendant uniforms, with the overhead lockers still in place and the windows looking out onto a Ghanaian car park rather than clouds.

The food is a mix of Ghanaian standards and continental dishes, decent rather than memorable. The novelty wears off on a second visit, but the air conditioning works reliably — a genuine advantage in Accra's heat — and first-time visitors reliably find it worth the journey. The plane has been closed periodically over the years; it's worth checking by phone before making the trip out.
