Accra is well placed for day trips out to the cooler hills behind the city and along the coast. The botanical gardens at Aburi, an hour's drive north up into the Akwapim hills, are an easy half-day. The slave-trading castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are a long day trip — leave before dawn to make it back the same evening — and a sobering complement to the National Museum's account of the trade. Kakum National Park, with its canopy walkway through the rainforest, sits between the two and is often combined with a castle visit.
