One of the most prominent Islamic buildings in Accra, in the Kanda neighbourhood near the Ring Road. The mosque was in planning for decades, with the completed structure finally opening in 2018, funded in part by Saudi Arabia. Its twin minarets are visible from several kilometres away. The national mosque serves as the centre for Ghana's Muslim community, which makes up roughly 17 per cent of the population, concentrated in the north of the country and in migrant quarters like Nima.
Non-Muslim visitors may enter the courtyard and walk around the exterior at most times; visits inside the prayer hall are possible outside prayer times, though customs vary and it's worth asking at the gate. Remove shoes before entering any part of the building. The surrounding Kanda neighbourhood has a number of small Ghanaian Muslim eateries within a short walk.
