National Museum of Ghana

West Africa's best collection, from prehistory to independence

One of the best collections in West Africa and the obvious place to start understanding Ghana. The archaeology and ethnography galleries cover everything from prehistoric tools through the Ashanti kingdom to independence, with a strong section on the Atlantic slave trade. Allow at least two hours. The museum has been intermittently closed for renovation in recent years, so check before going.
