Adum

Kumasi's commercial heart, dense with shops, banks, and street food

Adum is the commercial core of Kumasi — the grid of streets immediately south of the Kejetia roundabout where the banks, the cloth shops, the phone dealers, and the printers are stacked together. It is where Kumasians come to shop, change money, and meet friends after work.

The area is busy from dawn to early evening, and a walk through it is the best way to feel the city's commercial energy. Pickpockets work the busiest corners, so keep a hand on your bag, but the danger is exaggerated by visitors who have not actually been there. The grilled plantain and groundnut sellers along Prempeh II Street are reliably good.
