The modern Manhyia Palace, built in the 1970s alongside the old palace that is now a museum, is the working residence of the Asantehene — the king of the Ashanti. The compound is officially private, but visitors can attend the public Akwasidae ceremonies and walk the gardens between events.
The Akwasidae itself is held every forty-two days. Schedules are published in advance; dress modestly and arrive early if you want a view. Even outside ceremonies, the gate guards are often willing to let respectful visitors take a photograph from the courtyard.
