Kangemi Slum Tour

Resident-led community tour focused on resilience, not poverty

Kangemi is an informal settlement on the western edge of Nairobi, home to some of the city's most tight-knit communities. Unlike the better-known Kibera, it sees few visitors, which makes for a more genuine encounter with everyday Nairobi life.

Guided tours led by residents who were born and raised in Kangemi take visitors through local markets, workshops, and community projects over about four hours. Stops typically include a Jua Kali informal workshop area, the local market, and community self-help organisations. Guides can explain how residents navigate the challenges of life in the settlement and what initiatives are working to improve conditions.

The emphasis throughout is on the community's resilience and enterprise rather than poverty tourism. Groups are kept small and the tours are designed to be respectful of residents.
