Westlands is the beating heart of Nairobi's social life — a suburb about 4 km north-west of the CBD that has developed into the city's premier dining and entertainment district. The main strip around Westlands roundabout and the surrounding streets are thick with restaurants, bars, clubs, and shopping malls.
The neighbourhood has a cosmopolitan energy that reflects Nairobi's international population: you'll find Indian, Japanese, Lebanese, Chinese, and Ethiopian restaurants within walking distance of each other. The nightlife here runs late by any standard. Westgate Mall at the centre of the district was the site of a tragic terrorist attack in 2013 but has been rebuilt and fully operational for years.
Westlands is safe by Nairobi standards during the day and well-policed in the evening. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the standard way to get here from the CBD or other parts of the city.
