Nairobi Animal Orphanage

Kenya's oldest animal rescue centre, at the main gate of Nairobi National Park

The Nairobi Animal Orphanage is a rescue centre and care facility for injured, orphaned, and confiscated wild animals, established in 1964 — making it one of the oldest of its kind in Africa. It sits just inside the main gate of Nairobi National Park at Banda Gate.

Residents include big cats (cheetah, serval, African wildcat), crocodiles, tortoises, primates, and various antelope species that are being rehabilitated before release. The facility also takes in animals seized from the illegal wildlife trade. Some animals are permanent residents due to injuries that prevent release.

The orphanage is a more intimate and less expensive alternative to other wildlife attractions, and is often combined with the adjacent Nairobi National Park or the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nearby. It is particularly well-suited to visits with children. Open daily; admission is modest and payable at the park gate.
