Kibera, in the southern part of Nairobi, is one of the largest informal settlements in Africa, home to well over half a million people. Walking tours led by Kibera-born guides offer a grounded look at community life — visiting homes, streets, small businesses, and social projects — that is difficult to gain any other way.
Reputable tours take visitors to community initiatives such as orphanages, biogas projects, and youth clubs, and keep group sizes small (typically six people or fewer) to minimise disruption to residents. The guides, who live in the settlement, provide personal context that no outside perspective can replicate.
A safety escort accompanies tours; daytime visits are generally considered safe when done with an established operator. Several organisations run these tours; ask your accommodation for current recommendations, as operators change.
