Kitengela Glass

A glass sculpture estate on the Nairobi plains, part gallery, part garden folly, part working studio

Kitengela Glass is one of the most unexpected destinations in the Nairobi area — a working glass studio and art estate on the plains south of the city, about 30 km from downtown. Artist Nani Croze established the complex over several decades, building towers, garden walls, and outbuildings covered in mosaic glass, fused glass panels, and sculptures made entirely from recycled material.

The studio trains local artists in glass-blowing and mosaic-making techniques; the workshops are visible from the estate and glasswork is for sale. The outdoor spaces feel like an elaborate art garden: glass mobiles hanging from trees, towers of embedded coloured glass rising from the scrub, stained-glass windows installed in improbable outdoor settings.

Getting there requires a taxi or private vehicle — roughly 45 minutes from the city, longer in traffic. The estate is near the southern boundary of Nairobi National Park, and a combined trip (morning park drive, afternoon glass studio) is feasible. Call ahead to confirm opening hours.

A story
Nani Croze began collecting broken glass from Nairobi's streets and recycling it into mosaics and sculptures in the 1990s, gradually expanding into an entire estate of glittering towers, glass-embedded walls, and outdoor sculptures. The estate now trains local artisans and exports glass art worldwide — all starting from Nairobi rubbish.
