Nakuru makes a good base for a day or two of exploring the central Rift. Naivasha, an hour south on the A104, sits beside a freshwater lake fringed by yellow-fever acacias and is famous for its hippos, fish eagles, and the boat trips out to Crescent Island. Closer to town, Egerton Castle — a 52-room mansion built by an eccentric British peer in the 1930s — sits in the countryside near Njoro, about a dozen kilometres west.
