When to Go

Nakuru sits at 1,850 metres on the Rift Valley floor, so the climate is mild year-round — daytime temperatures usually 20–28°C, cooler at night. The two rainy seasons run roughly March to May (the long rains) and October to November (the short rains); roads in and around the parks can get slippery during the wettest weeks. The best months to visit are June through September and January through February, when skies are clearer, wildlife viewing in Lake Nakuru National Park is easiest, and the flamingo numbers tend to be highest. The annual Rhino Charge, an off-road fundraising rally for fencing the country's rhino sanctuaries, takes place near Nakuru in late May or June and is worth timing a trip around if you can find tickets.
