Nakuru sits on the main A104 highway between Nairobi and the western half of the country, about 160 km north-west of the capital. Frequent matatus run from Nairobi's River Road area; the trip takes around three hours when traffic is kind, longer when it isn't. Buses to Eldoret, Kisumu, Kericho, Kisii, Naivasha, Nyahururu, and Nyeri all leave from Nakuru's main stage at the eastern end of town, off Mburu Gichua Road — a chaotic spot where touts will happily steer you to the right vehicle. The standard-gauge railway from Nairobi to Kisumu also stops here.
