Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site

Neolithic and Iron Age site excavated by Mary Leakey

A small ridge a few kilometres east of the town centre, Hyrax Hill is one of the most important Neolithic and Iron Age sites in East Africa. Excavations begun by Mary Leakey in 1937 uncovered burial mounds, stone enclosures, grinding stones, and pottery dating back roughly 3,000 years. There's a small site museum at the entrance with finds from the digs, and a short walking trail that takes in the main excavations and a pit dwelling. The hill itself gives a good view back over Lake Nakuru.
