Haute-Ville

The Haute-Ville (upper city) occupies the main ridge of Antananarivo's hills, rising steeply above the commercial lower town. This is the oldest part of the city, where the Merina kings built their palaces and where the steep lanes, stone staircases, and closely packed houses create an urban texture unlike anywhere else in Africa. The Rova, Andafiavaratra Palace, the Andohalo Cathedral, and several of Tana's best restaurants are all in the Haute-Ville or its immediate surroundings.

Walking here is demanding — the slopes are genuinely steep and the stairs are numerous — but the reward is a completely different experience from the flat commercial city below. Neighbours shout across alleys, laundry dries between windows, and the views from the ridge over the city and distant rice paddies are exceptional. The neighbourhood is best explored on foot in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and the heat more manageable.
