Mahamasina Municipal Stadium

Mahamasina is Antananarivo's main sports and events venue, a large stadium sitting in a hollow below the Rova hill. It hosts football and rugby matches — both national passions in Madagascar — as well as major concerts and the ceremonial events that mark significant moments in Malagasy public life. Attending a match here, particularly a rugby game, gives a genuine sense of how sport functions as social glue in the city.

The stadium is visible from much of the Haute-Ville and marks the edge between the upper residential neighbourhoods and the lower commercial districts. On match days the surrounding streets fill with vendors and supporters, and the noise from the crowd carries across the ridge. Rugby in Madagascar has a strong following inherited from French colonial culture, and the national team (nicknamed the Makis) has competed in African Rugby Championships.
