Port Louis Central Market

The Bazaar de Port Louis, locally just 'the market', is two blocks of covered stalls split into a vegetable hall, a meat and fish hall, and a textile and souvenir section. It is loud, packed, and unsentimental — exactly the market of a working port city. Go in the morning when the produce is fresh.

The upper floor of the vegetable hall has food vendors selling dholl puri (flatbreads filled with split-pea curry), gateaux piments (chilli fritters), mine frite (Chinese-Mauritian fried noodles), and alouda (a sweet milk drink). A full lunch costs Rs 100–200. It's the best cheap eating in the city.

A story
The market dates from 1828 and was rebuilt in cast iron and corrugated steel in the 1840s — the rusting bones of that Victorian structure are still visible above the modern roof and stalls.
