Marie Reine de la Paix is an open-air shrine cut into the side of Signal Mountain, above the southern edge of the city. A series of broad stone terraces climbs up to a marble statue of the Virgin, with views over Port Louis and the harbour from each level.
The shrine was built in 1940 and is best known as the site where Pope John Paul II said mass in 1989 — a Mauritian moment of considerable significance, with hundreds of thousands attending. It's a 20-minute uphill walk from the racecourse, quieter than Fort Adelaide, and one of the calmest spots in central Port Louis.
