Chinatown

Port Louis Chinatown runs along Royal Road and Joseph Rivière Street, marked at both ends by ornate Friendship Gates donated by the Chinese government. The first Chinese traders arrived in the late 18th century from Guangdong and Fujian, and the neighbourhood has been continuously Chinese for around 150 years.

It still feels lived-in rather than touristy. Family-run grocery shops sell dried fish, Chinese medicines, and lottery tickets; small restaurants do dim sum at lunch; the Kwan Tee Pagoda, the island's first Chinese temple (1842), sits a few streets in. Good area for a wander and a cheap meal.
