Cap Malabata

Lighthouse and crenellated mock-fortress at the eastern entrance to the bay

The headland marking the eastern end of Tangier's bay, about 12 km from downtown. The drive along the corniche to reach it gives the best perspective on the city — Tangier laid out along the curve of the bay with the medina and kasbah rising at the far end. The cape itself has two landmark structures: an active French-built 1908 lighthouse, and a romantic crenellated mock-Gothic fortress put up by an Italian count in 1929 (now a private hotel).

The beaches along the road from Tangier to Malabata are among the cleanest within easy reach and on summer weekends fill up with Tangerine families. A municipal bus runs out from the centre of town; a grand taxi shared from Place du 9 Avril is faster.
