The souks of the medina are where the real shopping happens. Spices, leather goods, ceramics, handwoven textiles, and silver jewellery fill the narrow lanes. Bargaining is expected and part of the experience. The shops around the Petit Socco and along Rue des Siaghines are the most tourist-oriented; venture deeper into the medina for better prices and fewer crowds. In the ville nouvelle, Boulevard Pasteur has more conventional shops and a few upscale boutiques catering to the growing number of European visitors who cross the strait for a day of shopping.
