The Grand Socco, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, is where the medina meets the ville nouvelle. It was here that Sultan Mohammed V made a famous speech calling for Moroccan independence. The vast plaza is dominated by the minaret of the Sidi Abib mosque, decorated with multicoloured ceramic tiles. In the evenings a lively bazaar opens up with fruit, spices, and handmade goods. It is the natural starting point for any walk through Tangier.
