The Petit Socco

Atmospheric medina square steeped in literary history

Located in the heart of the medina, this little square is one of the most picturesque spots in Tangier. The noisy, bustling crowd in colourful clothing contrasts with those who have time to idle away over a cup of mint tea at the cafe terraces. Not long ago this was the centre of Tangier's seedier side, and it is not hard to imagine Burroughs, Genet, and Kerouac sipping tea here and dreaming up their fictional worlds. From the Petit Socco, the alleyway Rue de la Marine on the left leads past the grand mosque, said to be built on a Roman temple site.
