The Mellah

South of Place Hassan II, the Mellah is Tetouan's old Jewish quarter, distinguishable from the surrounding medina by its taller houses, decorated windows, and wrought-iron balconies that overhang the street. At its peak in the early twentieth century the quarter held several thousand Jews; today only a handful of families remain, but the architecture survives intact.

The Isaac Ben Walid Synagogue, founded in the early nineteenth century and named for one of the great Sephardic rabbis of northern Morocco, is sometimes accessible by appointment. Even without entering, the quiet lanes of the Mellah are an evocative wander.
