Place Hassan II

The grand open square between the medina and the Spanish town, paved in pale stone with four small minaret-like towers at the corners. The square was redesigned in 1988 to give the Royal Palace a more imposing setting, and the architects did their job — at dusk, lit and almost empty, the space has real grandeur.

Place Hassan II is the local promenade. Tetouani families come at sunset, children chase each other across the marble, and the cafes along the western edge fill up for the evening. The square is also the natural starting point for a walk into the medina (eastward) or into the Spanish new town (westward).
