The garden bar at the Núcleo de Arte artists' co-operative is one of the most enjoyable evenings out in Maputo. The bar occupies a large walled garden with old trees, sculptures, and a cluster of mismatched tables and chairs spread under canvas awnings. The crowd is the most mixed in the city: artists, students, journalists, foreign visitors and curious locals, all drinking 2M and Laurentina at fair prices.
There is usually live music on Friday nights — marrabenta bands, jazz quartets, sometimes hip-hop — and an art opening on a Thursday or Saturday. Food is limited to grilled snacks and prego sandwiches. The atmosphere is the point. Take a taxi back; the surrounding streets are quiet at night.
