Restaurante Mauá

Modest restaurant on Avenida Mao Tse Tung, strong on Mozambican home cooking

Restaurante Mauá is a modest mid-range Mozambican restaurant on Avenida Mao Tse Tung, run by the same family for years. It is the easiest place in central Maputo to find the country's deep-tradition home dishes: matapa (cassava leaves slow-cooked with peanuts, coconut and shrimp); caril de caranguejo (crab curry); galinha à zambeziana; xima porridge with stewed goat; and feijoada for those wanting the Portuguese end of the menu.

The dining room is plain and air-conditioned; portions are large; prices are reasonable. A prato do dia lunch including drink runs to a fraction of what Mundo's would charge. Good for a first introduction to Mozambican cooking beyond grilled prawns.
