Galo à Zambeziana

Polana chicken-grill, the city's best version of the national dish

Galo à Zambeziana is a small, casual restaurant in upper Polana that has spent more than two decades perfecting the same short menu: half or whole piri-piri chicken, charcoal-grilled, served with chips, rice and salad, and a side of molho cru (raw onion, garlic and vinegar sauce). Order the picante version with extra sauce if you can take the heat; the version cooked in coconut milk is the milder Zambezia-style preparation that gives the restaurant its name.

The dining is plain — plastic chairs, paper tablecloths, a TV on the wall — but the chicken is the best in the city. A whole bird with sides will feed two for the price of a single course at Mundo's. Order takeaway from the back hatch if you do not want to sit.
