Ghana High

Street-food canteen for jollof, egusi, and Ghana-style waakye

Address Apongbon, Lagos Island

Ghana High is the unprepossessing, perpetually busy canteen on Apongbon, just behind the Eko Bridge approach on Lagos Island. The name dates to the time when the Ghanaian High Commission was nearby. The menu is a long-standing canon of West African comfort food: jollof rice, fried rice, beans and plantain, egusi soup, fufu with goat-meat pepper soup, and the Ghanaian rice-and-beans dish waakye. Plates are stacked, prices are cheap, and lunchtime queues come from the law courts and the markets in equal numbers.
