Lagos sits on a coastal sand-spit and a long Atlantic beach runs the entire south edge of the metropolitan area. Bar Beach on Victoria Island used to be the centre of weekend beach life until coastal erosion narrowed it to a strip; the Eko Atlantic seawall now protects what's left. Tarkwa Bay, accessible only by boat from the VI jetties, is the calm and sheltered alternative inside the harbour. East along the Lekki Peninsula the beaches go on for kilometres — Elegushi, La Campagne Tropicana, Eleko — each privately operated and charging a small entry fee, with music, suya, horse rides, and rough surf. The Atlantic surf along this whole coast is heavy and there are strong rip currents; swim only where lifeguards are stationed.
