Shopping

Lagos shopping splits cleanly into two worlds. The markets — Balogun on Lagos Island for textiles and clothes, Idumota for fabrics and beauty supplies, the Lekki Arts and Crafts Market for souvenirs, and Yaba for cheap electronics — are loud, dense, cash-only, and require bargaining. The malls — The Palms in Lekki, Ikeja City Mall, Circle Mall, Maryland Mall — are air-conditioned, card-friendly, and stocked with mostly imported goods at international prices. For Ankara cloth made into shirts, dresses, or bags by local tailors, the markets are unbeatable. For the Nigerian fashion designers (Lisa Folawiyo, Maki Oh, Orange Culture), the showrooms are on Victoria Island and Ikoyi.
