Ikoyi

Quiet, leafy residential island east of Lagos Island

Ikoyi is the quietest of the central islands — a leafy residential district built on land reclaimed in the colonial era, where many of the early 20th-century colonial bungalows still stand under big mango trees. Originally a whites-only neighbourhood, it is now home to many of the city's wealthier residents, embassies, schools, and the Lagos Country Club. The Banana Island annex on the east side is one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in Africa. For visitors, Ikoyi is mostly a place to walk in the cooler late afternoon, eat at a few of the better restaurants, and visit the Kalakuta Republic Museum in the original Fela Kuti house.
