Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's last house in Ikeja — the one he moved into after the destruction of the original Kalakuta Republic by the army in 1977 — has been preserved as a museum since 2012. Three storeys of bedroom, bathroom, music room, and rooftop bar are kept much as he left them at his death in 1997. His clothes still hang in the wardrobe; his shoes and saxophones are on display. The rooftop is now used for live performances. A short distance from the New Afrika Shrine.

A story
Fela declared his Lagos compound an independent country — the Kalakuta Republic — in 1970. After the army raid of 1977 that left his mother dead, he kept up the declaration; the rest of his life he was, by his own account, a foreign national in Nigeria.
