Makoko

Floating fishing community on the lagoon north of Yaba

Makoko is the famous lagoon-side stilt community on the north shore of Lagos Lagoon — somewhere between 100,000 and 300,000 people living in wooden houses built on poles over the water, fishing, smoking and trading fish, and getting around by canoe. The community traces its origins to migrants from Egun fishing villages on the Beninese coast in the 19th century. The Nigerian government has periodically tried to demolish it; the community has periodically resisted. Visits are possible with a local guide and the chiefs' permission — the CDDA and several local NGOs run respectful guided tours. Do not attempt to wander in independently, and ask before taking photographs.
