Balogun Market spreads across most of the south-west corner of Lagos Island and is one of the largest commercial markets in West Africa. Textiles are the headline product — Ankara, lace, embroidered cloth, aso oke — but you can buy almost anything: shoes, electronics, perfume, household goods, hair extensions, jewellery. It is dense, hot, loud, and unfailingly chaotic; you will be jostled, called at, and probably charged the white person's price unless you bargain like you mean it. Go in the morning, go with a guide if it's your first time, and don't carry a visible camera.
