Victoria Island

Upmarket island with the embassies, business district, and Bar Beach

Victoria Island — universally just VI — is the gated, leafy island that holds Lagos's embassies, banks, expat hotels, and most of the city's better restaurants and clubs. Reclaimed from the lagoon at the start of the 20th century, it has been completely re-engineered over the last two decades into something close to a modern city centre: high-rises along Adetokunbo Ademola, the seven-star Civic Centre tower, the Eko Hotel, and the wide, palm-fringed boulevards. The southern edge runs along Bar Beach and the Atlantic ocean. Most visitors based in Lagos stay here.
