The King's Yard was the reception centre for Africans freed by the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron after 1807. The yard itself is long gone, but the stone gateway through which tens of thousands of liberated Africans passed still stands beside the Connaught Hospital — a plain, weathered archway with an inscription that reads "Royal Hospital and Asylum for Africans rescued from slavery."
It is one of the most important pieces of slave-trade history left standing in Africa, and almost completely unmarked. Ask at the hospital gate for directions; the gateway is just inside the compound.
