Bertram House is the only Georgian-style brick house surviving in central Cape Town, built around 1839 for the lawyer John Barker. It now contains a small Iziko museum of nineteenth-century English domestic life at the Cape, with original furniture, ceramics and silver donated by the Ann Lidderdale Bequest.
The house sits at the top of Government Avenue, between the university campus and the Company's Garden, and is an easy add-on to a visit to the other museums in the area. Compact, free, and almost always empty — a small pocket of nineteenth-century quiet.
