Tuynhuys

President's Cape Town office, an 18th-century garden pavilion

Tuynhuys — literally "garden house" — is the official Cape Town office of the South African presidency, a long low Cape Baroque pavilion at the top end of the Company's Garden. Originally built in 1700 as a place of refuge for the Dutch East India Company governor, it has been the seat of executive power in Cape Town in one form or another for over three centuries.

The building is not open to the public, but the exterior is easily admired from the garden's main avenue. The honour-guard ceremony at the gate is one of the few pieces of formal pageantry in central Cape Town. Combine a glance at Tuynhuys with a walk through the Company's Garden.
